January 25, 2018: Beginning of the year Kick-Off.  Discuss the program schedule, neighborhood concerns and Cold Weather Safety.

February 22: Revolutionary Charleston: Rebels and Red Coats.  A presentation by Ken Scarlett from Revolutionary Charleston about our role in the Revolutionary War.

March 22: Solid Waste and Recycling: What to do with the garbage?  Walter Desmond, JIPSD Solid Waste Supervisor and a representative from Charleston County Recycling

April 26: Drainage on James Island, What was it like, what have we been doing and what will the future look like?  Chris Wannamaker, Charleston County Stormwater Manager.

May 24: Summer Recreation programs offered at City facilities that Town residents can participate in at City pricing.  Ashley Kellahan, Town Administrator and representative from City Recreation Department.

June 28: Tour of New Town Hall Facilities

July 26: No Meeting

August 7:  National Night Out

August 23: Hurricane and Disaster Preparation: How to do damage assessment in your neighborhood and who to report to.  Mark Johnson, Public Works Director

September 27: Field Trip to Pinckney Park to tour Phase 2 improvements and future development.

October 25: Tree Conservation: Caring for our suburban forest.  (Zennie knows people from the tree seminar).

November 15: Island Sheriff’s Patrol program on neighborhood crime watch programs.  Sgt. Shawn James, ISP program director.

Town of James Island Hosts Free Shredding Event 



The Town of James Island is pleased to announce FREE SHREDDING to the public on Friday, March 2 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Shredding will be provided by SHRED 360. This event will take place in the parking lot at the Town Hall, 1238-B Camp Road, James Island, SC.

All Attendees are asked to remain in your cars when you arrive to the event to help everyone enjoy the "FREE PAPER SHREDDING EVENT".  In an effort to shred sensitive documents in a timely manner, attendees are limited to three (3)  boxes (copy paper box or smaller) or three bags (kitchen trash bag or smaller) per vehicle. There is no need to remove binders, binder clips, paper clips, staples, rubber bands, or CDs/DVDs prior to shredding.

We hope you will join us for this free service to the public on Friday, March 2, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Please tell your family and friends.

Meetings for the Week of February 5, 2018 


The Town of James Island will hold the following Meetings/Events the Week of February 5, 2018:

Tuesday, February 6 @ 6:00 p.m. - James Island History Commission: The Commission will hear a presentation from Brockington Associates and receive an update on the James Island History Booklet. Find the agenda here

James Island Arts Commission: Plan to attend the Annual Arts Auction on Saturday, February 24, 5-7 p.m. at the Town of James Island Town Hall.  The monthly meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 7 at 5:30 p.m. at the Town Hall. Agenda

James Island Children's Commission Meeting will be held on Thursday, February 8 at 5:00 p.m. at Town Hall. Plans are underway for the Annual Easter Egg Roll... Watch for more information. 

Simeon Pinckney Historical Marker Dedication: Come join the celebration on Saturday, February 10 at 11:00 a.m., Pinckney Park, 461 Fort Johnson Road. The Town will celebrate this historic event in conjunction with Black History Month, honoring Pinckney on the Simeon Pinckney Homestead.

Traffic Alert: Temporary Nighttime Detour on Camp & Folly Intersection Improvement Project

Traffic Alert: Temporary Nighttime Detour on Camp Road for Folly Road at Camp Road Intersection Improvements Project


Charleston County Government announces a temporary nighttime detour starting Tuesday, February 6 on Camp Road. Camp Road will be closed to traffic between Pauline Avenue and Julia Street between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. Flagmen will direct traffic. Crews are conducting drainage work across Camp Road near Oyster Point Row for the Folly Road at Camp Road Intersection Improvements Project. All work is weather permitting. 


February 6 – February 8


  • Nighttime Detour is scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. on Camp Road.
  • Traffic will be diverted from Camp Road onto Pauline, Chandler, and Julia Streets.
  • Camp Road will remain open to local traffic between Julia Street and Oyster Point Row.
  • Flagmen will be on site to direct traffic.  
  • Drivers will have access to businesses and residential properties along Camp Road at all times.
  • Drivers traveling through the project’s construction zone are asked to be aware of equipment and crews working in the area at all times.


The Folly Road at Camp Road Intersection Improvements Project on James Island involves improvements to Folly Road from about 1,000 feet south of Camp Road to the intersection with Eugene Gibbs Street and Rivers Point Row, and improvements to Camp Road from West Madison Avenue to Oyster Point Row. Improvements will relieve traffic congestion and localized flooding by adding turn lanes and upsizing drainage pipes. Bike lanes and sidewalks will also be included in the project.
