News Release #4: Hurricane Ian

The Charleston area is under a hurricane warning and a storm surge warning.  Prepare for tropical conditions beginning this afternoon and lasting into Saturday, having the most significant wind and rain throughout the day Friday.  Moderate to major flooding is expected during periods of excessive rainfall and high tides.  At this time, storm surge heights are predicted at 4-7 feet.

The Town of James Island has moved to OPCON 1 at 2:00 pm today, Thursday, September 29, 2022. This means that normal Town operations have ceased, however, residents and businesses can call Town Hall if they need to reach us at any time over the weekend at 843-795-4141.  Please call 911 if you have an emergency.  Regular Town operations are expected to resume on Monday, October 3, 2022.

Storm Preparation Information:

-All sand has been used; there are no more sandbag operations at Town Hall.

-The Charleston County Citizens Information Line is now open.  Call 843-746-3900, or 843-746-3909 for Spanish speaking assistance.

-Charleston County shelters are now open at Dunston Elementary and a pet shelter at 3841 Leeds Avenue.  Visit this webpage for information: Hurricane Info | Emergency Management Department (charlestoncounty.org)

-Buses will transport folks from marked hurricane evacuation signs on the island to these shelters.  Check the webpage above for more information.

-Downed trees blocking roads: call 911.
