Hurricane Dorian News Release #8, September 3, 2019

The Governor's Evacuation Order is still in effect for coastal counties. Schools and Government Offices will remain closed this week until further notice. Mayor Woolsey has declared a State of Emergency for the Town of James Island as the threat of significant impact from Hurricane Dorian remains. The Town, in cooperation with the City of Charleston, continues to issue sandbags through today, Tuesday Sept. 3rd until 5 pm or while supplies at James Island Town Hall – 1122 Dills Bluff Rd. Residents will be limited to 10 bags per household. Enter Town Hall from Dills Bluff Rd and follow directions to ensure a smooth distribution. The Town has currently issued approximately 17,000 sandbags.

James Island's Evacuation Zone is A. James Island is in Evacuation ZONE A. [MAP] After an evacuation order is given, everyone on James Island must take SC 171 (Folly Road) to US 17 (Savannah Highway) . Evacuees will then travel south on US 17 to I-526 to the reversed lanes of I-26. One benefit to early evacuation (leaving before the evacuation order,) is that you may choose your own route.

The Town of James Island's MEOC Team has currently evacuated to Greenwood, SC and is operating out of the Greenwood County EOC. The Operations Team remains at James Island Town Hall to monitor conditions on James Island, however Town Hall is closed for regular business until further notice. Candidates for the 2019 Municipal Election are still able to file at Town Hall until Thursday, Sept. 5th at 5 pm.

The Town of James Island participated in the State Conference call at 9 am this morning as well as the Tri-County Conference call today at 12:30 p.m. with Charleston County. The Town of James Island remains at OPCON 1.

Key Messages
The latest forecast maintains Dorian as a major Category 3 hurricane as it passes off the Georgia and South Carolina coasts Wednesday into Thursday. While the forecast track keeps the center of Dorian offshore, the Georgia and South Carolina coasts remain within the cone of uncertainty, and a track even slightly closer to the coast could bring dangerous hurricane conditions onshore. As a result of this, now is the time to enact your hurricane plans.

STORM SURGE: Major, life-threatening storm surge flooding is expected to develop as Dorian passes offshore. Inundation is expected to be at 4 to 7 feet.

WINDS: Tropical Storm force winds are 90% likely and hurricane force winds are 30-40% likely on James Island.

RAINFALL FLOODING: Heavy rainfall and flooding of streets/roadways and poorly drained urban areas is possible, especially near the coast which includes James Island.

TORNADOES: Isolated, brief tornadoes are possible, mainly at the coast which includes James Island.

MARINE AND OTHER COASTAL HAZARDS: Extremely dangerous winds/seas, high surf, life-threatening rip currents and severe beach erosion are expected.

ONGOING COASTAL FLOODING: Minor to moderate salt water flooding will occur with high tides today and tonight.

Residents are asked to please bring in all garbage cans from the street and secure them. Garbage and Trash operations have suspended until after the storm passes.

Shelters are used as a last resort and citizens need to bring necessary personal items with them. Transportation pickup points on James Island are listed below. Buses will run from the hurricane pickup points to shelters from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day weather permitting.

CC-308: Hideaway Pizza Kitchen – 608 Harbor View Road & Clearview Drive. CC-309: Harris Teeter – 1005 Harbor View Road (at Harbor Place Drive) CC-310: Bus stop at Folly Road and Westway Drive. CC-311: Harris Teeter – 1985 Folly Road and Sol Legere Road. CC-312: Bus stop at Old Military Road and Lamar Road. CC-313: Bus stop at Ft. Johnson Road and Secessionville Road. CC-314: Bus stop at Riverland Drive and Stonewood Drive. CC-315: Bus stop at Wappoo Drive and Plymouth Avenue.

Charleston County recycling services are suspended until further notice.

Bees Ferry Landfill and citizen convenience centers are closed until further notice.
