The Zoning / Livability Code Enforcement Department is the arm of the Town's Municipal Government that ensures the ordinances of the Town are followed by residents, property owners, and business owners. Zoning and Livability Code Enforcement includes planning, zoning, health and safety issues, business license enforcement, and other town codes. All cases handled are considered criminal violations and are subject to appearance in Charleston County Magistrate's Court if the violation is not abated within the timeframe or to the degree set forth in town ordinances. Code Enforcement Officers work in conjunction with residents and town departments to develop plans to avoid a court hearing or summons and obtain a resolution that results in code compliance.
The duty of a Code Enforcement Officer is to help residents that are not in compliance abatement their violation(s) and to come into compliance. This position requires a broad knowledge of town ordinances and the ability to discern between civil and criminal issues.
