James Island to Celebrate New Historical Marker at Seashore Farmers' Lodge

The Town of James Island will celebrate a new historical marker at the Seashore Farmers’ Lodge, 1898 Old Sol Legare Road, on Saturday, June 7, 2025, at 2 p.m. Sponsored by the Town's History Commission. The marker honors the history of the Lodge and the important role it has long played in the Sol Legare community.

Chartered in 1906 with the International Liberty Union and built in 1915 by independent Black farmers, the Seashore Farmers’ Lodge No. 767 provided essential resources for its members, including health and life insurance, farming supplies, and educational opportunities. It also hosted annual parades, community gatherings, Vacation Bible Schools, and raised funds to help families through illness and financial hardship. In recognition of its historical significance, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007.

Today, the Seashore Farmers Lodge Museum & Cultural Center continues to honor the Gullah Geechee legacy of cooperation, education, and self-sufficiency with rotating exhibitions and a permanent collection.

“The Seashore Farmers’ Lodge is part of what makes James Island so special,” Mayor Brook Lyon said. "We’re honored to help celebrate its long and proud history."
