James Island declares state of emergency; sandbag operations continue Sunday

The Town of James Island declared a state of emergency at 1 p.m. today, as state and regional officials continue to monitor Tropical Cyclone Nine.

While the path of the storm system is still unclear, it's currently expected to bring heavy rain, coastal flooding and potentially high winds to our area early next week.

“This emergency declaration will allow us to move quickly if our area experiences significant impacts,” Mayor Brook Lyon said. “In the meantime, we're asking our residents to be prepared and keep watching local weather reports.”

Free sand and bags will be available again Sunday, Sept. 28, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Town Hall, 1122 Dills Bluff Road. Residents should bring their own shovels to fill and assemble bags, with a limit of 10 per household. Town staff and community volunteers will be on hand to provide assistance.

Residents are encouraged to follow Charleston County Government on social media, download the 2025 Hurricane Guide, and sign up for the Citizen’s Alert System.

For the most accurate and up-to-date weather forecasts, residents should stay tuned to the National Hurricane Center and National Weather Service Charleston websites, as well as local media and SCEMD’s SC Emergency Manager app.
