Third Annual Silent Art Auction and Arts Reception

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

JAMES ISLAND, SC (February 9, 2016) - James Island Arts, a committee of the Town of James Island, is pleased to announce its third annual Silent Art Auction and Artists' Reception to celebrate the wealth of cultural achievement in our community. The event is free, open to the public, and will take place at James Island Town Hall, 1238-B Camp Road, on Saturday, February 27, 2016, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

More than thirty artists' works are featured in the Silent Auction. Works donated by local visual artists, as well as theatres, art schools, musicians and poets, will be available for bidding by event-goers. Starting bids are set by the artists, and proceeds are split between them and James Island art classrooms.

The committee also hosts a students' competition for James Island K-12 students. Entries are selected by James Island art teachers and put on display at Town Hall and at Island Bazaar next door. This contest is judged by West Ashley High School teacher Dan O'Brien.

The reception and silent bidding begins at 5:00 pm. Bidding ends at 6:45, when the student winners will be announced. While viewing the art and placing bids, guests will be entertained by James Island student musicians including the James Island Middle School Strings, directed by Rebecca Schubel, the Harbor View Elementary School Chorus, led by Shelley Goughnour, and a string quartet under the direction of Andrea Kemper from James Island Charter High School. Complementary wine, light hors d'oeuvres and non-alcoholic beverages will be served.

Last year's event brought in around 200 attendees and yielded over $2000 in donations. The funds have been used for canvas, classroom demonstrations by professional artists, and the framing required for entries for the First District Congressional Art Competition.

James Island Arts is a division of James Island Pride, whose mission is to create a positive image for James Island through various beautification projects and to build cultural awareness in and of our community. This public auction is held to celebrate accomplished local artists and performers, encourage youngsters and their parents to take artistic talent seriously, and provides a cultural venue to young classical musicians.
