Town of James Island Monitoring Weather Systems

Town monitoring Atlantic weather systems

Free sandbags available for residents beginning at 9 a.m. tomorrow

Town of James Island officials are closely monitoring two tropical weather systems in the Atlantic -- Hurricane Humberto and Invest 94L -- and are in close contact with Charleston County Emergency Management regarding precautionary preparations. While current guidance suggests that Humberto will stay well out to sea, Invest 94L has the potential to threaten the Southeast, including the Carolinas, as a named storm early next week.

“While we can't know the tracks of these storms yet, early projections suggest that our area could see significant impacts,” Mayor Brook Lyon said. “So we're asking residents to start making normal storm preparations now, and to keep a close eye on local news and weather reports over the next several days.”

Sandbag availability: From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27, and Sunday, Sept. 28, the Town will have a limited supply of free sand and bags available at Town Hall, 1122 Dills Bluff Road, for residents to build their own sandbags (limit of 10). Residents should bring their own shovels for assembly. Staff will be on-site to provide assistance as needed.

Additional information: For the most accurate and up-to-date weather forecasts, residents should stay tuned to the National Hurricane Center and National Weather Service Charleston websites, as well as local media and the SC Emergency Manager app.
