Town of James Island partners with Pet Helpers on Hurricane Helene Relief

The Town of James Island is partnering with Pet Helpers to help get much-needed pet supplies to areas devastated by Hurricane Helene.

Beginning Oct. 3 and continuing until further notice, residents wishing to donate pet food, leashes, collars, harnesses, cat litter and other pet essentials can drop them off between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at James Island Town Hall, 1122 Dills Bluff Rd. Bottled water and personal hygiene products, including baby wipes, will also be accepted.

The first truckload of supplies is bound for residents in Aiken, S.C., with future shipments leaving on a weekly basis.

In addition to these efforts, the Town is also encouraging donations to the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army, Samaritan's Purse, and other reputable relief organizations.

"As we in the Lowcountry know better than most, hurricanes can devastate whole communities," Mayor Brook Lyon said. "I want to thank Pet Helpers for organizing this effort. As a dog and cat owner myself, I know how much it will mean, not just to hungry and thirsty pets but to all the people who love them with all their hearts as well."

Pet Helpers Executive Director Melissa Susko said she just hopes to help people and pets in need.

"I've seen people in our area rise to the occasion every time we're needed," Susko said. "And now, with our neighbors struggling after this terrible hurricane, I'm sure we'll do it again."
