Tropical Storm Hermaine Update

Tropical Storm Hermine – Town of James Island Media Release #2

The Town of James Island participated in another Tri-County Conference Call this afternoon to discuss Tropical Storm Hermine's updated projections as well as preparations being made agency-wide. The likely effects of the Storm as of 11 am this morning are as follows:

  • Rain- 4-8 inches later Thursday through Friday evening
  • -Winds- 30-35 mph sustained with 50-55 mph gusts early Friday through Friday evening
  • -Rip currents- increased rip currents and beach erosion through Friday evening
  • -Tornado/waterspouts- increased chances late Thursday through Friday evening
  • -Storm surge- 1-2 feet inundation, low concern due to fact this will occur during times of low tide

The Town of James Island plans to move to OPCON 4 at 5:00 pm today along with Charleston County and thus will be on heighted alert with partial activation of the Municipal Emergency Operations Center. Please make preparations by securing any loose items outdoors and have emergency supplies ready.

SCE&G crews are closely monitoring the storm and are staging extra crews for rapid damage assessment and restoration response afterward. They do expect electric outages due to high winds and rain, but currently don't anticipate longer than normal restoration time.

Charleston County Public Works is at this time not planning on distributing sand bags. They can be purchased at Lowe's, Home Depot, and other hardware stores at a low cost.

Charleston County School District has announced they will be closed on Friday.

The Town will continue to monitor the situation and send out regular updates as more information becomes available.
